Commission honors robotics team, community college and local youth; public comments scheduled events

During its April 24 meeting the Calhoun County Commission used part of its agenda for recognitions and community updates.
Chairman Terry Howell presented certificates to members of the Alexandria High School Robotics Team in recognition of their season, including winning the Calhoun County Robotics Championship and advancing to national competition. Team members Brie Peavy and Eldrin Sani spoke briefly about the dedication required and thanked the commission for its support.
Commissioner Patterson presented a proclamation to Dr. Kathy Murphy, president of Gadsden State Community College, honoring National Community College Month; Dr. Murphy thanked the commission and emphasized the college's role in offering opportunities to county residents and noted student statistics for the local campus.
Commissioner Shears presented a proclamation recognizing 11‑year‑old Ryder Greenwood of White Plains for his actions protecting a friend during a recent dog attack; Sheriff Falon Hurst honored Ryder with a letter, a Junior Deputy badge and an identification card.
During the public‑comment period Jakob Williamson, Public Affairs Director for the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce, invited commissioners to the annual State of Law Enforcement Forum scheduled for May 23, 2025. Michael Webb, who serves on the Calhoun County Board of Education and the Alabama Law Enforcement Appreciation Foundation (ALEAF), reminded attendees of ALEAF events at Jacksonville State University May 12–15. Dr. Michael Barber, superintendent of Jacksonville City Schools, highlighted student scholarships, recent theater successes and ACT scores above the state average.
The commission adjourned at 10:32 a.m.; no formal votes were required for the recognitions and public announcements.
