Commission confirms appointments, updates polling locations and hears local praise for EMS and extension programs

At the April 10 meeting, County Administrator Jonathan Gaddy recommended two appointments to fill unexpired terms and the Commission approved both by unanimous voice vote.

The Commission appointed Ken McElroy to the District 5 seat on the 911 District Board and appointed Sheriff Hurst to the Highland Health Systems at‑large seat vacated by Sheriff Wade. Commissioners and public safety representatives present expressed support for the appointments.

Gaddy also presented resolutions updating polling locations: Beat 9 Box 2 will be listed as the Clyde H. Pike Civic Center (500 Mill Street, Piedmont); Beat 17 Box 1 will move to Ohatchee Senior Center (7805 AL Highway 77, Ohatchee); and Beat 12 Box 1 will be named DeArmanville Methodist Church. Each change was adopted by unanimous voice vote.

During the public‑comment period, Johnny Warren of Anniston EMS and Pat Brown, director of the Piedmont Rescue Squad, thanked the Commission for Mr. McElroy’s appointment and recounted life‑saving EMS response, including a personal account from Brown about a recent rescue. Audrey Maxwell, Tourism Director for the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce, invited residents to a ribbon cutting on April 24 marking the Chief Ladiga Trail extension; Dr. David West, County Extension Director, announced upcoming plant sales and the near completion of the Master Gardener class.

Commissioner Shears closed the public comment section with thanks to the Extension Office and DHR; Commissioner Henderson moved to adjourn and the meeting ended at 10:35 a.m.
