Calhoun County Commission declares multiple properties public nuisances and approves abatements

On April 24, 2025 the Calhoun County Commission voted unanimously to declare multiple properties public nuisances and to adopt abatement resolutions after Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize recommended action on a list of addresses across Jacksonville, Anniston and Ohatchee.
The commission approved the resolutions of abatement by voice vote (record notes: 13 resolutions in file). The list of properties recommended for abatement included 45 Fieldstone Way, Jacksonville (owners Wayne Eklund and Terry Martin); 5609 Ridgewood Avenue, Anniston (Paul Lucius English III); 1469 Grayton Road S., Ohatchee (Robert Earl Martin); 703 W. 44th Street, Anniston (John and Lona Pitts); 435 E. 54th Street, Anniston (John Emigh c/o Laura Law); 32 Tiffany Lane, Ohatchee (Jerre David Ford II and David Abbott); 335 Old Gadsden Hwy., Anniston (Michael Sanders); 331 Old Gadsden Hwy., Anniston (Truman Puckett); 4021 Ridge Drive, Anniston (Truman Puckett); 331 E. 54th Street, Anniston (Billy Hodge c/o State of Alabama); and 0 Grayton Road S., Ohatchee (Robert Earl Martin).
Manager Mize also recommended dismissing public-nuisance designations for four separate addresses; the commission adopted those dismissals unanimously. For the earlier-listed properties Mize again recommended formal nuisance declarations; Chairman Terry Howell moved to declare the properties as recommended and the motion carried unanimously (record notes: 11 resolutions in file).
Two property owners addressed the commission during the discussion. Wayne Eklund said he has begun removing nuisances from 45 Fieldstone Way, and Paul Lucius English III reported he has begun cleaning the yard at 5609 Ridgewood Avenue.
The commission recorded its actions as formal resolutions and directed staff to proceed with the abatement process where applicable. No timetable for abatement work or estimated county costs was provided in the meeting record.
