Calhoun County approves dozens of public-nuisance abatements and declarations

Calhoun County commissioners on Nov. 13 unanimously adopted resolutions to abate public nuisances at 16 properties and to declare another 15 properties as public nuisances across Anniston, Ohatchee, Oxford and Jacksonville.
Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize presented the lists of addresses and recommended action, saying owners had been notified but no representatives attended the meeting for the first group of 16. Commissioner Henderson moved to adopt the abatements; Commissioner Shears seconded and the motion carried by voice vote.
Mize also recommended dismissing nuisance findings for four properties; Commissioner Patterson moved adoption, Commissioner Shears seconded and the commissioners approved the dismissals. Separately, the commission approved an itemized invoice of $8,026.00 for cleanup at 322 S. Marshall Street in Anniston (owner: Harold W. Winningham c/o Greg Winningham). Commissioner Shears moved approval of the invoice and Commissioner Wilson seconded; the motion passed unanimously.
For the 15 newly declared nuisance properties, one resident, Isabella Dowdy, spoke to say she recently sold 5912 Medders Street and was no longer the owner; Mize agreed to meet with her after the meeting to discuss records. Commissioner Henderson moved to declare the listed properties as public nuisances; Commissioner Wilson seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
The resolutions for the abatements, dismissals, declarations and the removal invoice were entered into the county record; the minutes note that 16 abatement resolutions and 15 declaration resolutions are in the files. The commission did not indicate any immediate demolition schedule or cost-recovery timeline beyond the single invoice approved at the meeting.
