Calhoun County approves dozens of nuisance abatements and declarations

Environmental Programs Manager Kraig Mize presented multiple nuisance-related items to the Calhoun County Commission on Sept. 25, 2025, and the commission approved a slate of abatements, dismissals and declarations by unanimous voice votes.
Mize recommended public nuisance abatements for 13 properties in Anniston, Weaver and Alexandria; property owner Benny Lovell said he had started improvements at 1023 W. 32nd Street, and representative Steve Dover said they had placed a dumpster at 702 Cedar Springs Road to remove debris. Commissioners adopted the abatement resolutions after a motion by Commissioner Henderson and a second by Commissioner Shears.
Mize also recommended dismissing nuisance proceedings for 13 other properties; no owners attended those items and the commission approved the dismissals on a motion by Commissioner Shears and a second by Commissioner Henderson.
For one property at 31 Carriage Road, Mize presented an invoice of $626.00 for removal costs (owner Wayne Guthrie); commissioners approved the invoice. Separately, Mize recommended declaring 20 properties as public nuisances across several municipalities. During that item, Mr. Lovell said he had hired assistance to clean his lot and noted that cleanup was difficult because of "finding needles in his yard." Another representative, Angelea Ledbetter, said owners had boarded a house and posted no-trespassing signs and planned to clean the property.
All motions related to abatements, dismissals, invoices and nuisance declarations were approved by unanimous voice vote. The resolutions for approvals and declarations are on file with county records for follow-up enforcement and any required remediation steps.
