Superintendent reports construction progress, enrichment camps and new athlete screenings

Dr. Atkinson, the district superintendent, reported updates on facilities and student programs at the Lexington School District 3 board meeting on April 16, 2024. He said the district's spring enrichment camp drew 292 students and that the district employed 37 certified and 14 noncertified staff to run the program.
The superintendent outlined the primary school construction in eight phases and said phase 4 (the red hall) has been completed and returned to students and staff. He said phase 5 (green hall and the high school weight room) is scheduled for final inspection April 30, phase 6 (blue hall) is expected to begin May 6, and phases 7 and 8 (yellow and purple halls) are targeted for mid-July completion, with approximate dates requested around July 12 and July 19 respectively. The gym final inspection is scheduled for May 9; landscaping and site work will follow. "Phase 4 ... has been turned back over to our students and staff," Dr. Atkinson said.
On student supports and recognition, Dr. Atkinson listed extracurricular and academic highlights, including Beta Club competition placings and a high school production. He also noted partnerships: the district will offer a free cardiovascular screening (EKG and ultrasound) for athletes ages 14 and up through MUSC on April 30 and May 1. He named Jennifer Richardson and Brantley Bizard as coordinators of the enrichment program and thanked the Rotary Club, PTO and Vulcan Materials for financial support of a literacy event featuring former college players.
The board accepted the report without formal action. The board moved on to recognize student groups and the school nurse leadership graduate immediately after the superintendent's presentation.
