At public comment during the Dorchester County Council’s Sept. 16 meeting, residents asked the Council to pause action on termination of a county lease and to provide more information about the property’s emergency operations designation and nonprofit status. The Council voted to impose a 45-day stay on the termination to allow staff time to collect documentation.
Residents Susan Windsor and Scott Hughes raised the request that led to the stay; Council members agreed to the pause by a 4–0 vote (Councilman Rob Kramer Jr. absent). The motion directs County staff to gather information on whether the facility is designated and used as a dedicated emergency command center and to confirm the South Dorchester Community Foundation’s 501(c)(3) status.
During the same public comment period, Lindsay Wheatley told the Council she was concerned about the planned temporary closure of Worlds End Turn when permanent repairs begin next summer, saying that tractors and heavy farm equipment may not be able to use the recommended alternate route due to a bridge tonnage limit. Council members did not act on the Worlds End Turn point at that time but earlier received project scheduling details from MDOT staff during the meeting.
The 45-day stay creates a deadline for staff follow-up. The Council adjourned at 8:12 p.m.
