Dorchester County Council approves local event permits and agrees to pursue three FY26 federal funding projects

At its Feb. 18 meeting, the Dorchester County Council approved two local event permits and agreed to pursue three projects through FY26 Congressionally Directed Spending (CDS) applications.
Event approvals: The council unanimously approved a request contingent on state sign-off for the Maryland Freedom Swim finish line at the Dorchester County Visitor Center (motion by Councilman Mike Detmer, seconded by Councilman Rob Kramer). The council also unanimously approved the RISE Flag Football league's use of J. Edward Walter Park for Saturday games April 27–June 15, 2025, subject to insurance, background checks for coaches, police presence, a liability release and other standard stipulations (motion by Councilman William V. Nichols, seconded by Councilman Ricky C. Travers).
FY26 federal funding: The council agreed (motion by Councilman Ricky C. Travers, seconded by Councilman Rob Kramer) to submit CDS applications for: rehabilitation of sewer pipelines and pump stations; design and study of the Hoopers Island causeway; and improvements to the Dorchester County Health Department building on Race Street. The council also unanimously approved a letter of support for a Town of Hurlock CDS application for wastewater-treatment-plant upgrades; President Pfeffer noted the letter does not obligate County funds.
Poll confirmations: Council members ratified several interim poll decisions, including letters of support for Senate Bill 796 (Dorchester County — Sunday Hunting time restriction repeal) and House Bill 1124 (cross-filed with SB 964 on privatization of well and on-site sewage disposal activities) by 5–0 votes. The record shows no recorded majority support for House Bill 232 (beverage container recycling) following a request from the City of Cambridge.
The approvals were procedural and conditioned on standard insurance and safety requirements; no fiscal commitments beyond letters of support were recorded at the meeting.
