Dorchester County approves $755,000 in FY2026 Program Open Space projects, council to identify $63,000 county match

At its Aug. 5, 2025 meeting Dorchester County Council approved Program Open Space (POS) FY2026 local‑share recommendations presented by Recreation & Parks Director Duc Trieu. The package totals $755,000 in POS funds with an identified county match of $63,000 that the Council directed County Manager Jerry Jones to identify.
The approved allocations and stated county matches are: • Colwill Land (116.40 acres) — $100,000 POS, $0 county match listed. • School Street (22 acres) — $150,000 POS, $15,000 county match (project description: commercial pole barn and restrooms/storage). • Glasgow Street (1 acre) — $200,000 POS, $20,000 county match (construction of new pickleball courts and stormwater work). • Thendara 4‑H Center (24.57 acres) — $200,000 POS, $20,000 county match (outdoor range, kitchen/bathroom renovation, roof replacement, parking and security fencing). • Christ Rock Park (10.5 acres) — $80,000 POS, $8,000 county match (field fencing replacement and dugout renovation).
Councilman Travers moved to approve the recommendations, Councilman Nichols seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. Trieu and Finance staff presented project descriptions and estimated funding requirements as part of the Program Open Space Local Share apportionments and balances presentation. The minutes indicate staff will determine the specific County funding source for the $63,000 match.
The approvals allow staff to proceed with project planning and grant compliance steps required by the State POS program; construction or contract awards will require subsequent staff actions and, where necessary, further Council approvals.
