Dorchester County Council approves $1.25 million in IIJA bridge engineering grant applications

The Dorchester County Council voted Dec. 16 to submit two Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) grant applications through the U.S. Department of Transportation totaling $1,252,595 to fund engineering for bridge maintenance.
Public Works Director Matt Ozman asked the council to approve two applications that would fund 100% of engineering costs: $686,925 for the Hoopers Island and Hip Roof bridges and $565,670 for Shorters Wharf. The council approved the submittal upon a motion by Councilman Rob Kramer, seconded by Councilman William V. Nichols; the vote was unanimous.
Separately, the council confirmed interim poll decisions to increase the L‑Gem grant application from $1,189,586 to $1,375,000 (raising the county match by $9,758) and to submit an $80,000 Resiliency through Restoration Initiative grant to design shoreline protection on Elliott Island with no local match required.
County staff were directed to proceed with application submittals; at the meeting the council did not authorize matching construction funds or commit to future appropriations beyond the polling confirmations.
