Council approves $8,500 airport sewer reconnection and names Conowingo designee; records poll support for state bill and local fire company

Dorchester County Council members unanimously approved reconnecting sewer service to the South Hangar at the County Airport on Feb. 3 and took several administrative actions related to water‑quality engagement and interim letters of support.
Airport Director Steve Nuwer asked the Council to proceed with reconnecting sewer services to South Hangar using Harmon's Septic Care, the only contractor to provide a completed quote; the cost is $8,500 and the work will be funded from the FY26 Contingency Fund. The motion to proceed was moved by Councilman Ricky C. Travers, seconded by Councilman Rob Kramer, and approved unanimously.
The Council also unanimously designated Councilman Mike Detmer to represent Dorchester County at a meeting with the Maryland Department of the Environment concerning the Conowingo settlement and water quality implementation. The minutes record that the Conowingo matter and related implementation discussions will be the subject of that MDE meeting.
In a separate confirmation of interim actions, the Council recorded a 4–0 vote to provide a letter of support for Senate Bill 288, which alters certain calculations for highway user revenues capital grants beginning in fiscal year 2027; and a 5–0 vote to provide a letter supporting Rescue Fire Company, Inc.'s efforts to retain display space for the Train Garden at 307 Gay Street (the "Old Firehouse").
County Manager Jerry Jones thanked Public Works and public safety teams for their response during a snow and ice event and explained limitations of salt at low temperatures, urging patience as crews balance safety and road preservation. Mr. Jones also encouraged residents to complete the county Strategic Plan survey by Feb. 20, 2026. Resident Sharon Smith asked how to qualify for construction grant funding; Grant Writer Marilyn Williams responded that a final design plan is required as the first step for construction grants.
With no further business, the Council adjourned at 6:57 p.m.
