Council approves moving Public Works building to bid phase after review of WPA design

Dave Edwards of WPA Architects presented the final design and bid-ready drawings for Genola’s proposed Public Works building and answered council questions about bays, mezzanine use, drainage and heating. Edwards described a steel building with four equipment bays, a mezzanine/storage area, office space and an alternate for a bridge crane in one bay.
Council discussed drainage and septic constraints, and the architect explained why a traditional French-drain solution was not feasible under state rules for buried septic/drain fields beneath vehicle areas. The design team proposed a sloped floor that allows bays to be rolled open and pushed out for cleaning, which removed an estimated $25,000–$30,000 from the project cost.
On a motion to advance the project to bidding, the council approved moving the Public Works building into the bidding phase and using the state's Bonfire procurement platform to solicit contractors.
"We're proposing a steel building, just south of here where the existing Public Works building is," Edwards said, outlining the program and alternates. Staff said the bid period typically runs three to five weeks and the town will review contractor proposals before selecting a contractor; WPA committed to assist in vetting bidders and responding to contractor questions during the bid period.
