Council votes to extend FAU interim campus development agreement through 2025

The Boca Raton City Council voted unanimously (5‑0) on Nov. 19 to extend the city’s interim campus development agreement with Florida Atlantic University by one year, to Dec. 31, 2025.
Deputy city staff explained that state statute requires campus development agreements for state university development and that FAU is not ready to enter a new multiyear agreement this month. "FAU is not prepared at this time to enter into a new campus development agreement, so this resolution would extend the existing agreement for 1 additional year to allow them time…to negotiate the terms of the agreement with the city," a staff presenter said. The extension was approved at the close of the first required public hearing; the second hearing and final action remain on the December 10 agenda as a statutory formality.
City Attorney Joshua Kaler clarified that Florida law requires two public hearings for the resolution and that, unusually, the council’s vote tonight on the first hearing did not violate that requirement; the second hearing will proceed as scheduled.
The extension keeps the interim agreement in place while FAU continues internal preparations and negotiations with the city; no substantive changes to the agreement were made at the November vote.
