Boca Raton council pauses action on pending transaction pending fundraising numbers

The City of Boca Raton held a special meeting on Nov. 4, 2024, during which council members agreed to pause action on a pending transaction until Jan. 7 while they await additional information, including fundraising numbers from the project partner. The clerk said a report will be presented to the council on Jan. 13.

The meeting opened at 1:56 p.m. and began with the pledge of allegiance and a roll call conducted by the clerk, Miss Sittins. The clerk reported that the mayor and council members were present. The chair said the special session was a brief follow-up to matters discussed at the Oct. 21 meetings and noted that the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) is a partner on the transaction.

The chair opened a public hearing and invited comments; seeing no one come forward, the chair closed the hearing without public testimony. The chair then referenced an earlier manager report by "Mister Brown," asking whether he had anything further to add; the transcript records a brief reply but does not clearly attribute the response to a single named speaker.

Miss Sittins told the council, "based upon the decision of the CRA, which is a partner with the city in this transaction, I would suggest that we have the same suspension of any action until January 7 with to be reported on the thirteenth." The chair responded that the city was not "waiving any rights to act before then," and said the council did not anticipate acting until it received more information from the center, including fundraising numbers; Miss Sittins confirmed this understanding.

The council took no formal recorded vote in the transcript. With no further discussion, the chair adjourned the special meeting and announced the council would resume shortly for its workshop meeting.

The matter remains pending; the council expects an update on Jan. 13 and may act earlier if new information warrants it.
