"It's 38,000 or something to run it," the councilmember said, pressing the need for financial sustainability.
Other councillors defended the current approach for certain nonprofits or presenters who provide services to the town and recommended preserving waivers in those cases. "The ones that are presenting to us ... are doing a service to the town," one member said in support of selective waivers.
Members discussed options including a petition process for funeral fee waivers, more local programming to increase sustainable use, and clearer criteria for when to waive fees. Several council members suggested tabling the item to collect more public input and to review specific affected groups before changing the ordinance. No motion passed during the meeting.
