Intern presents dark-sky outreach, permit guides and communications materials

Josie, the town’s community engagement and communications intern, presented a portfolio of outreach materials at the July 15 council meeting, including postcard mailers announcing the town’s dark-sky designation, separate brochure drafts for residents and business owners, a kiosk-sign prototype, and QR-code permit guidance for the building department.
"I’m Josie and I’m a community engagement and communications intern," she told the council, explaining that her work aligns with the town’s strategic-plan goals on community health, safety and website maintenance. She said the brochures explain shielded fixtures, correlated color temperature, lumens and motion sensors and include the ordinance sections where residents can find more detail.
Josie suggested producing two brochure variants — one aimed at residents and one at business owners — and recommended additional review by planning and zoning staff to ensure technical accuracy. She also proposed a simple insert showing examples of shielded fixtures and a kiosk sign to highlight the designation’s environmental and cultural significance.
Council members praised the internship program and the materials. Staff said the postcards would be mailed the week of July 20 and that the town will move forward with a single-photo print run to reduce costs. Councilmembers encouraged continuing website updates and suggested stronger project-tracking tools to keep interns’ work organized for follow-up.
