Local nonprofit seeks municipal sponsor for $50,000 gaming grant to buy truck and expand housing moves
Summary
Off the Streets asked the Londonderry Township Board on July 1 to sponsor a $50,000 gaming grant to buy a moving truck and support security deposits and household items for people exiting homelessness; the board agreed to let the group present at the Aug. 5 meeting and noted an Aug. 15 grant deadline.

Jim Young, representing Off the Streets — a 501(c)(3) affiliated with Seven Sorrows of the BVM Church in Middletown — asked the Londonderry Township Board of Supervisors on July 1 to act as municipal sponsor for a $50,000 gaming-grant application aimed at expanding the nonprofit’s housing-placement work.
Young told the board Off the Streets, formed in March 2023, has helped 239 people obtain housing and distributed $49,504 in security deposits. He said the requested grant would buy a truck to facilitate moves, increase funds available for security deposits and purchase household items that are not otherwise donated. Young asked to present a short program at the township’s Aug. 5 meeting; he said the grant sponsor form is due Aug. 15.
Manager David Blechertas told the board he would schedule the presentation for August so members could consider municipal sponsorship before the grant deadline. The board did not vote on sponsorship at the July 1 meeting; Young was invited to make a fuller presentation at the August session.
The request drew brief discussion about other municipalities being asked to sponsor the same application; Lower Swatara and Steelton were identified as other potential sponsors. The board did not take a formal action on the grant application at the July meeting.
