Representatives of Lower Dauphin Communities That Care (CTC) presented to the Londonderry Township Board on Aug. 5 seeking township support to sustain free youth programming across Lower Dauphin schools and neighborhoods.
Former executive director Jim Hazen explained the volunteer organization’s mission to reduce youth risk factors for substance abuse and anxiety through programs including a preschool literacy outreach that has mailed 16,200 books overall and reached 3,646 preschoolers in Londonderry Township; a Books on Board bookmobile; wellness programming; school‑based mentoring; Club Ohelia and a Strengthening Families series that has served 326 participants over 12 years (57 from Londonderry). Program Director Angela Durantine said 94% of the group’s revenue goes to programming but that funding has declined this year; she asked the township for support during the annual budget review and for help promoting volunteer opportunities and posting the group’s web link on the township website.
The board did not take formal action at the meeting but staff said they would consider CTC’s request during budget discussions and posting opportunities on township communication channels.
