Londonderry Township supervisors voted Aug. 5 to accept a $350,000 Susquehanna River Basin Commission grant to fund Phase IV of the Conewago Creek sediment‑reduction and stream restoration project.
Township Manager David Blechertas told the board the award includes a 10% match that is being satisfied with other grant funds, meaning the township expects no out‑of‑pocket cost. He noted the state’s PRP program is paused and warned that timing challenges with state rulemaking could put previously awarded grants at risk if projects do not move forward in a timely way.
Blechertas described the work as additional sediment reduction consistent with phases one through three and said the Army Corps of Engineers will likely require five years of maintenance and monitoring after construction. "Considering a million dollars of grant money at no cost to the taxpayer, it is a good trade off," he told the board. Supervisor Mel Hershey said the township has an obligation to use awarded funds and avoid jeopardizing future grant opportunities.
The board approved the grant agreement pending solicitor review (motion by Mel Hershey; vote: Shellenhamer, Kopp, Geyer, Hershey — Aye). Next steps include solicitor review of the agreement and continued coordination with grant partners and the Army Corps on maintenance responsibilities and project scoping.
