Londonderry supervisors approve traffic study after resident raises safety concerns on Route 441

The Londonderry Township Board of Supervisors voted Aug. 20 to fund a traffic study at a resident’s Route 441 location and to order preliminary engineering reviews for two other sites where motorists have asked for PennDOT signage.
Township Manager David Blechertas told the board he received three separate requests for signage on PennDOT roads, including one from Kate Costik near Route 441. Blechertas said Costik asked for signs reading “SLOW BLIND CURVE” and “BOAT CROSSING AHEAD,” and requested a painted “SLOW” legend on the roadway, citing increased traffic after the opening of Crane Clean Energy and the designation of her home as a future bus stop. He estimated a full traffic study would cost approximately $3,000–$4,000.
Two other requests sought “Hidden Driveway” signs at 1251 School House Road and 1444 Round Top Road. After discussing the cost of studies, the required PennDOT warrant process, and legal access issues for driveways, Supervisor Bart Shellenhamer moved to approve a full traffic study for the Costik location and preliminary engineering studies for the two additional addresses to determine whether full studies are warranted. The motion, seconded by Supervisor Scott Merchlinski, carried unanimously.
The board’s action authorizes staff to proceed with the study work and, if PennDOT warrants signage based on the studies, to pursue installation. The board also directed that the two other requests be included in the 2026 budget for further consideration if the preliminary engineering work indicates a full study is necessary. The decision does not itself change traffic controls; any signage still requires PennDOT approval based on study results.
Next steps identified in the meeting include scheduling the contracted traffic study for the Route 441 site and completing the preliminary engineering reviews for the School House Road and Round Top Road locations. The board did not specify a vendor at the meeting.
