District honors Seal of Biliteracy qualifiers and students across schools

At its April 22 meeting the Jefferson School District recognized students across grade levels and celebrated 12 students who qualified for the Wisconsin Seal of Biliteracy.
Ellen Spitali, a Spanish teacher and the district’s seal of biliteracy director, described the AAPPL standardized assessment used to document listening, speaking, reading and writing proficiency and explained the additional English‑proficiency and sociocultural competence requirements. She said 12 students will receive the Seal of Biliteracy imprint on their diplomas and 10 more students will receive a district Golden Eagle award for narrowly missing the full seal.
The board also honored the district’s Citizens of the Month from East, Sullivan, West, Jefferson Middle and Jefferson High School; principals introduced students and summarized teacher nominations. Jefferson High School representatives announced Riley Schroedel as the class of 2024 valedictorian (weighted GPA 4.1782) and Brady Gehring as salutatorian (weighted GPA 4.1647), and outlined their coursework and extracurricular involvement.
An awards ceremony for the Seal of Biliteracy qualifiers was scheduled for the following evening, and board members thanked families, teachers and community partners for supporting language learning and student activities.
The recognitions were presented near the start of a long agenda that later turned to staffing and operational items.
