Murray County gives informal support to regional Safe Routes planning grant

The Murray County Board agreed to verbally partner with the SW Regional Development Coalition on a federal Safe Routes planning grant that would fund countywide safety planning for school routes; local cities and school districts would be asked to provide $3,000–$5,000 matches.
Chris Webb of the Southwest Regional Development Coalition told the Murray County Board on March 3 that a forthcoming federal Safe Routes (Safe Streets for All) planning grant would fund a multi‑community safety action plan, including Slayton and Fulda. Webb said SWRD would be the applicant and asked the county for a verbal partner commitment at the meeting and a resolution of support in June if the grant advances.
The plan would hire an engineer to inventory needs, set priorities and develop design specifications. Webb said the federal award is expected to be announced in August or September 2026 and that final contracting with the federal government could delay the start of work until 2028. He estimated local matching contributions from cities and school districts at roughly $3,000–$5,000; Murray County would not be asked to charge an administration fee and SWRD would manage the project across the participating counties.
Board members gave informal agreement that SWRD should proceed and return in June for a letter or resolution of support. The action taken at the March 3 meeting was an informal commitment to partner; no binding county expenditure or formal resolution was signed at that time.
