Boca Raton interviews candidates for advisory boards; council to appoint tomorrow

The Boca Raton City Council on Sept. 9 conducted interviews for several advisory-board openings and said appointments will be made the following night.
Applicants who spoke included Allen West (seeking reappointment to the Community Appearance Board; he said he lives in Delray Beach and has served eight years on the board), Joe Peterson (licensed landscape architect and city resident who said he has served 24 years on the same board), and Seth David Yeslow (architect/engineer, adjunct faculty at Florida Atlantic University and employee of Stephen L. Cohen & Associates, applying for the Permitting and Construction Review Board). Each candidate gave brief remarks on their experience and reasons for wanting to serve.
Council members asked clarifying questions about residency and membership qualifications for board seats. The mayor noted that city code generally requires board members be city residents but allows appointments of nonresidents in circumstances where no qualified city resident is available. Council asked staff to check the code and report back; the clerk and city attorney’s office said they would follow up to confirm whether requirements could be broadened for certain positions.
Council said it would vote on appointments at the next regular meeting; candidates do not need to be present to be considered.
