The Boca Raton City Council on Monday proclaimed Sept. 23–29, 2024 as National Diaper Need Awareness Week in the city and urged residents to donate to local diaper banks and drives.
During the proclamation reading, council staff recited findings that national surveys show roughly one in two families face diaper need and that buying diapers can consume an estimated 14% of a low‑wage family's post‑tax income. The proclamation named the Diaper Bank Covering South Florida for its role in distributing diapers to families in need.
Dre Garcia, identified by the mayor as president of the Diaper Bank Covering South Florida, accepted the proclamation on behalf of the nonprofit and the families it serves. "We serve 3,200 children per month here in this community," Garcia said, and she emphasized that diapers are not covered by SNAP or WIC and that families without adequate diapers often cannot use daycare. Garcia described waiting lists at the organization and urged donations and volunteer support.
The council encouraged residents to donate to diaper banks and drives to help reduce diaper need and its related health and childcare barriers.
