Appling County commissioners extend emergency order, approve appointments and short contract renewals

The Appling County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 7 approved a series of administrative and emergency measures during a regular meeting.
County Manager Reid Lovett recommended extending the county's state of emergency declared after Hurricane Helene; Commissioner Chad Kent moved to extend the declaration from Jan. 4 through Feb. 4, 2025, Commissioner Jakharis Jones seconded, and the motion passed.
Commissioners approved 30-day extensions of debris pickup and monitoring contracts to allow further evaluation and approved continuing the FEMA lease while relocating it to 83 S. Oak Street to free the Ag Center for large events. The board also approved resolutions authorizing the tax commissioner to receive payments and waiving certain penalties.
On appointments, the board reappointed Tracy Brown as county attorney (motion by Commissioner Edwards; Commissioner Barnes seconded; Commissioner Sellers abstained; Commissioners Jones and Kent recorded as voting in favor) and unanimously approved Commissioner Chad Kent as vice chair. The board filled multiple advisory and commission seats, including reappointments and new nominations for local boards and authorities; motions, seconds and required abstentions were recorded where appropriate.
In executive session the board considered personnel matters and then voted in open session to continue Mike Deal's employment for an additional 30 days at reduced, part-time hours (20 hours per pay period) and to continue Yvonne Sellers' employment with benefits through the remainder of January 2025.
