CleanSlate pitches local refuse services as Cornish weighs future of Econo Waste contract

Keaton Haviland, representing CleanSlate, presented his company’s refuse and optional recycling services to the Cornish Town Council on March 4 and offered to submit a written bid for comparison when the town’s contract with Econo Waste comes up for review.

Keaton told the council that, based on his experience, some larger haulers such as Waste Management have contracts that ultimately cost municipalities more over time. He said CleanSlate could roll out new trash cans, manage can inventory and deliveries, and would invoice the town for pickups and landfill fees if the town prefers to retain customer billing. He also said CleanSlate offers optional recycling and green-waste pickup that would not be required for all households.

Council members asked practical questions about billing and market stability. Councilmember Colton Creech asked whether the company could remain a competitive option over several years; Keaton expressed concern about private-equity consolidation in the valley and said typical municipal refuse contracts run five to 10 years. Mayor Matt Leak asked Keaton to provide a bid and said Keaton could present pricing directly to the mayor rather than release detailed numbers in open session.

Joe Hansen, a citizen in attendance, said he liked the idea of keeping money in local hands. The council did not take formal action at the meeting; Mayor Leak reminded the council that town rules require at least one year’s notice to exit the existing Econo Waste contract, and asked Keaton to provide a bid for future consideration.
