Cheatham County commission rejects zoning change to allow general retail in C2 district

Cheatham County commissioners voted 5–5 on Jan. 22, 2024, and thereby rejected an amendment to the county Zoning Resolution that would have added "General Retail Trade" as a permitted use in the C2 Neighborhood Commercial district.
The item was advertised and opened for a public hearing; no one spoke during the hearing. The Building Department record lists Franklin Wilkinson associated with the item. Commissioner Diana Lovell moved the amendment and Commissioner Chris Gilmore seconded it. The roll-call tally read: Bill Powers (Yes), Calton Blacker (Yes), Walter Weakley (No), Diana Pike Lovell (Yes), Tim Williamson (No), Eugene O. Evans Sr. (No), Chris Gilmore (Yes), James Hedgepath (No), B.J. Hudspeth (No), Mike Breedlove (Yes). David Anderson and Ann Jarreau were absent.
The commission did not take additional comment after the vote. Because the motion failed, the zoning map and Appendix A Table I remain unchanged; the record shows the commission declined to expand permitted uses in the C2 district at this time.
The meeting packet and minutes list this matter under the Building Department agenda item; no ordinance number or further administrative steps were recorded in the minutes on Jan. 22. The commission may revisit zoning-code amendments in a future session if staff or a committee reintroduces changes.
