The City of Charleston finance committee on Monday approved Resolution 26‑18 to purchase and install a new training apparatus for the Charleston Fire Department near Station 8.
Mister Michaud said the purchase is a competitively sourced turnkey solution and that $400,000 of fund balance had been set aside. He told the committee the resolution caps the project at $425,388.54; the training structure itself is estimated at about $397,000 and foundation work was estimated around $28,000 but could be lower after soil sampling.
Mister Michaud said the site would be near Station 8 on the west side near Orchard Manor and that the lease agreement for the green space had been completed. He emphasized the structure will not allow live burns: "It will not be any live burn within this. It can be smoke, fake smoke... but no live burning will be taking place in this." The committee voted to adopt the resolution.
The purchase is intended to provide local training capacity so the department does not need to rely on neighboring jurisdictions' facilities.
