Committee authorizes purchase of firewall and edge routers; price comes in under budget

The City of Charleston Finance Committee on Nov. 17 adopted Resolution 25-114 authorizing the mayor or city manager to enter into an agreement with Advex to purchase a new external-facing firewall and edge routers for the city’s information systems.
Mr. Michaud described the purchase as replacement of an older external-facing firewall and edge router to support growing cloud-based workloads and higher throughput. He said the existing system had a maximum throughput of about 500 megabytes per second and that the new equipment will provide substantially higher throughput. Staff noted that Adam Cottrell, the director, was available to provide technical specifications if committee members required them.
The total cost is $58,766.43, which staff said is nearly $30,000 less than the amount the city had budgeted. The committee adopted the resolution by voice vote.
Staff did not provide detailed technical benchmarks during the discussion but said the upgrade is part of broader network improvements at City Hall and the City Service Center.
