City staff brought a late item asking the Finance Committee to enact a policy that would support a state Residential Economic Development Districts grant application that could provide up to $2.5 million for new housing construction.
CPED staff said the application — released Dec. 15 — has a Jan. 16 deadline, which prompted the late submission. "These funds, 2,500,000.0, are going to be used to supplement our new construction," a staff member said, describing the proposal as a tool cities use to spur housing construction and infrastructure work. CPED noted that waiving tap‑in fees and zoning permit fees is authorized in the statute as actions that can boost an application's competitiveness.
The committee accepted the late item and moved it to the council floor for consideration. Law department staff advised that the fee waivers are permitted under the program rules and that enacting the policy would help the city score points in the grant process.
What’s next: if council approves the policy and any waivers, the administration will submit the application before the Jan. 16 deadline; staff said the initiative is intended to support construction by YNDC and related partners.
