Hinton Area Elementary inspection finds HVAC and lighting issues; board given remediation timeline

Facilities staff presented a review of inspection findings for Hinton Area Elementary at the July 23 board meeting, identifying several items that require corrective work.
The report named problematic ERU (fresh-air intake) units, lighting issues, missing ceiling tiles, improper chemical storage and some roof shingles that needed replacement. Staff said ERU and heat-pack unit replacements or repairs, plus filters, are part of the planned work; parts have been ordered and smaller corrections are expected to be completed by Aug. 19, with larger items targeted by Aug. 26.
Board members asked about lighting upgrades and noted LED technology has advanced since prior energy-efficiency work; staff said replacing bulbs and shields may be a cost-effective first step while assessing larger window or fixture replacements.
The superintendent confirmed a state reviewer (Preston from the state department) plans to walk the middle school facility and the Hinton area site on Thursday to verify progress and compliance with the inspection requirements.
Next steps: facilities will provide a formal written response to the inspection within the state’s 30-day timeframe and share the district’s corrective timeline and follow-up inspection plans with the board.
