Emery County Commission approves donations, state grants and marketing contracts

The Emery County Commission on May 20 approved a string of routine items including donations to student programs, state grant applications for public safety and trails, and renewed marketing and procurement authorizations for the county's travel office.

The commissioners unanimously approved the consent agenda and then approved two youth sponsorships: a $250 donation to student Izzy Turner to attend the 2025 Governor's Honors Academy at Southern Utah University and a $250 donation adding two previously listed honor-band participants. Izzy Turner, who said she was among roughly 50 students selected from nearly 300 applicants, told commissioners she would report back on the program.

The commission also approved a request to provide $200 per participant to the Huntington Elementary archery team so 13 students can attend the World Archery tournament in Myrtle Beach June 5–7. A representative for the school described team results in state competitions and estimated some costs (team and family lodging, travel and registration). Commissioners asked logistical questions about targets, draw weight and team size before voting to fund $200 per student.

On grants and contracts, the commission approved the Emery County Sheriff's Office application for the state task force grant, a request described as $82,000 (noted in the meeting as $12,000 more than last year). Commissioners also approved two OHVR (Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation) grants/contracts: one for trails equipment and supplies (jackhammer, generator, culverts, and re-usable stock) and one to fund two part-time trails crew positions for 2025–2026. Staff described the ability to use in-kind match (federal and state land agencies and leased trucks) and said the trail workload has increased following travel-management planning.

The travel office presented two tourism-related items: renewal of the county's Go Travel site subscription (estimated $2,250 annually) to generate visitor leads and a motion to advertise an RFQ for local photographers and videographers to build a library of marketing assets, with initial guidance of about $7,500. Commissioners approved both items.

Other approvals included donating two large portable AC/fan units to Castle Dale (for use at the Blue Sage Arena) and purchasing replacements for the county road department so event needs and departmental needs are both met.
