The senator told the City Council on July 23 that the funds are intended to address storm‑surge risk and concrete wall replacement where the Intracoastal bend takes frequent impacts from passing boats. Polsky credited local advocates, council members and lobbyists for helping secure the funding during this year’s appropriation process.
Representative Peggy Gossett Seidman, who joined the council for the presentation, said the item was one of several water‑infrastructure priorities she and the senator worked to preserve during a session that included numerous vetoes and shifting budget priorities.
The state check was presented to council members on the dais and staff said the funding will boost an already‑identified local infrastructure project. Council members thanked the delegation and encouraged residents to participate in upcoming elections mentioned by the legislators.
There was no formal council vote tied to the announcement; staff will return to the council with implementation steps, timing and any required permitting or matching needs.
The next procedural step is for city staff to incorporate the appropriation into project planning and the capital budget schedule.
