Appling County commissioners approve insurance renewal, SPLOST vehicle purchase, leases, nominations and set budget workshop

Appling County commissioners approved a series of operational and personnel items at their June 3 regular meeting and reaffirmed several appointments and contracts at a June 24 called meeting.
On June 3 County Manager Reid Lovett presented a 2025 property and liability insurance renewal totaling $499,249 (about $60,000 higher than the prior year) and noted a $25,018 safety credit; the board unanimously approved payment of the renewal invoice. The same meeting included a unanimous vote to purchase a 2020 International MV607 box truck for $35,000 to be converted into a firetruck after a professional inspection; the motion was made by Commissioner Daryl Edwards and seconded by Commissioner Jakharis Jones.
The board approved revised Public Works and Fleet Management job descriptions for multiple roles, approved a FY2026 budget workshop date of June 24, 2025 at 5:30 PM, and approved the annual Pineland BHDD lease for the Appling/Jeff Davis Service Center (Sunshine Center) at $2,300 per month.
During the June 24 called meeting the board received the FY2024 audit summary from Campbell O’Steen of Harris & Company, LLC, which concluded county finances look sound and recommended timely budget amendments as large revenues are received. Commissioners also confirmed Hospital Authority and DFCS board appointments (including reappointing Perry White and reappointing Carlos Rooks to DFCS) and approved replacements where applicable.
Personnel actions approved after an executive session on June 24 included hiring Sandy Dominy as Elections Supervisor at an annual salary of $50,562.19 and raising Crystal Blaine’s hourly rate to $16.61 to cover additional responsibilities in Dominy’s absence.
