Evansville City council meeting postponed after quorum shortfall

The Evansville City Council postponed its agenda until Feb. 9, 2026, after a council member said too few members were physically present to meet Indiana's quorum requirement.

During roll call, the clerk read a list of council members, including Councilwoman Taylor, Councilman Hieronymus, Councilwoman Hatfield, Councilwoman Kayla Lindsay, Councilman Brickmaier, Councilwoman Allen, Councilman Green, Councilman Johnson and Trockman. Several of those names were answered with "present" or "here," but not enough members were in the room to satisfy the statutory physical-presence rule cited in the meeting.

"Unfortunately, under Indiana law, it requires, for a quorum that 50% of this body be physically present in this room," a council member said, adding, "That would be 5 members ... Unfortunately, we do not have a quorum to conduct business today." The council member raised the comment as a point of order, prompting the chair to halt business for the day.

The council chair apologized for the inconvenience and told those who had come that "today's agenda will be heard on February 9, and voted on then." No motions were made and no votes were taken before the meeting was canceled.

The council is scheduled to reconvene on Monday, Feb. 9, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.; agenda items that were set for this session will be carried to that meeting.
