Resident urges FDOT to install rapid‑flashing beacon at A1A crossing outside condominium

Ms. Stern, a resident of a condominium at 250 South Ocean Boulevard, told the Boca Raton Community Redevelopment Agency on June 10 that the pedestrian crossing outside her building on A1A lacks the rectangular rapid‑flashing beacon (RRFB) devices installed at other nearby crossings and that the omission creates a safety hazard. "Please can somebody install one of those RRFB crossings outside our condo building before a terrible accident happens there," she said.
The resident said building management has emailed the city about the missing RRFB since 2022 and that a July 2023 response from the Florida Department of Transportation indicated FDOT had not authorized additional crossings on A1A at that time; the resident said the 250 South Ocean Boulevard location had been included on a future installation list but the device had not yet been installed.
Mister Brown, the CRA director, told the board the A1A roadway is under FDOT jurisdiction and that the city cannot install traffic control or warning devices without FDOT authorization. "We will review it with the DOT," he said, adding staff will follow up on the resident's concern.
Why it matters: A1A is a high‑traffic corridor in Boca Raton; the resident described repeated near‑misses and stroller users attempting to cross without the flashing beacons used on other segments of A1A. The CRA does not control state roadways, so any physical installation requires FDOT approval and coordination with city staff.
