Duplin County Schools honors students, scholarship recipients and nationally certified teachers

At the June 3 meeting the board recognized Going Local grant winners, students selected for Governor's School, recipients of major scholarships and Duplin's 'Grow Your Own' scholarship recipients; three teachers were also recognized for earning National Board certification.
The Duplin County Schools Board of Education used part of its June 3 meeting to honor students and educators. On behalf of the Farm Bureau, a presenter recognized several teachers who won 'Going Local' classroom grants, including Bridal Baker (Chinquapin Elementary), Garrett Hurley (Early College) and Juanito Hernandez (Wallace-Rose Hill High School).
Nicole Murray recognized students named to the North Carolina Governor's School: Eduardo Gonzalez (Wallace-Rose Hill High School) and Maya Smith (Duplin Early College High School). Murray also recognized recent graduates receiving major scholarships and acceptances, including Daniel Jones, a Morehead-Cain Scholar who plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Elieres Marquez Chavez, who the presenter said had acceptances at multiple Ivy League schools and received a Gates Scholarship; the presenter noted Chavez plans to attend Duke University as a Benjamin Duke Scholar.
Mr. Tindall presented details of the Duplin County Schools 'Grow Your Own' scholarship program, saying, "Duplin County Schools Grow Your Own scholarship offers high school seniors the opportunity to receive financial support for college in the amount of up to $5,000 per year for four years as they pursue a teaching degree." Recipients named were Liliana White (North Duplin), Jerrick Kellum (James Kenan High School), Jacqueline Juan Catalan (Wallace-Rose Hill), Savannah Kennedy (East Duplin High School) and Emery Rayner (East Duplin High School). Tindall also recognized three employees who earned National Board certification: Hannah Bell, Heather Blackburn and Samantha Rouse.
The board thanked the students, families and educators for their accomplishments and gave several rounds of applause.
