Duplin County Schools board recognizes two students accepted to North Carolina Governor's School

The Duplin County Schools board honored two students accepted to the North Carolina Governor's School and said certificates will be presented at their schools.
Nicole Murray introduced a special recognition at the Duplin County Schools May 6 business session for two students accepted to the North Carolina Governor's School. Eduardo Gonzalez, a student at Wallace-Rose Hill High School, was accepted to Governor's School West at Greensboro College to study social sciences. Maya Smith, from Duplin Early College High School, was accepted to Governor's School East at Meredith College to study natural sciences.
"The North Carolina Governor's School is the oldest statewide summer residential educational program in the nation," Nicole Murray said, noting that the program is competitive and focuses on exploration rather than grades. "It is a high honor for students to be accepted for participation."
Murray said the students were unable to attend the meeting and that certificates would be presented at their schools this week. She thanked the students' teachers, parents and staff for their support and thanked Janice Goldsby for facilitating the recognition.
The board did not take any formal vote related to the recognition; the acknowledgment was presented as a ceremonial item during the business session.
