Duplin County school board postpones STEAM update, approves personnel recommendations and recognizes Presidential Scholar nominee

The Duplin County Board of Education on Feb. 4 postponed a scheduled STEAM presentation until Superintendent Dr. Boshan can attend, recognized a student as the district’s nominee for the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, and approved personnel recommendations after an executive session.
Chairman Davis opened the meeting and asked Kevin Smith to lead the board in prayer. The board removed item 6 — the Duplin County Schools STEAM update — from the evening’s agenda and approved the revised agenda by voice vote.
Nicole Murray presented Lili (Lily) Stringer, a student at North Duplin Junior-Senior High School, as Duplin County Schools’ nominee for the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program and congratulated her. “Congratulations,” Murray said as she presented the certificate and wished Stringer luck if she advances to the national finalist round in May.
Dexter Edwards of the Duplin County Farm Bureau recognized local grant applicants and outlined scholarship opportunities available to students. Edwards said the Farm Bureau is offering a state/flex scholarship worth $5,000 a year for four years, a Duplin County scholarship of $1,000 a year for four years, and a newly restructured $1,200 scholarship that will be divided to support students pursuing trade-school programs, and he noted application deadlines of March 31.
After the recognitions, the board approved the consent agenda by voice vote with no recorded discussion. The board then recessed into executive session under state general statutes to discuss personnel, confidential student information, attorney-client privileged material and planning related to emergency response and school-violence incidents.
Returning to open session, the board approved the personnel recommendations made in executive session; the approvals were made by motion, second and voice vote. Chairman Davis said the superintendent’s report would be moved to the March meeting because Dr. Boshan was not present.
Board member Miss Edwards told colleagues she attended a recent elementary conference and urged broader recognition for academically and non-athletically accomplished students as well as athletes, saying, “I’m just asking you to honor all of our children.”
The meeting ended after the board moved, seconded and approved adjournment. No roll-call tallies were provided in the record; votes were recorded as voice votes.
