Duplin County board installs officers, approves personnel changes after executive session

The Duplin County Board of Education on Dec. 3 swore in members, elected leadership for the coming term and approved personnel recommendations after a closed-session review.
The board chair opened the business session and invited Kristen Hall to give the opening prayer. The board then moved quickly through routine business, approving the meeting agenda after a motion by Miss Edwards and a second by Mr. Marcy, the chair said.
The board conducted an oath of office ceremony during which Crystal Strickland, identified in the meeting as assistant clerk of superior court, read the oath that references support for the U.S. and North Carolina constitutions and faithful discharge of duties to the local board of education.
Nominations for board leadership followed. Mr. Davis was nominated for board chair; Mr. Reggie Keenan was nominated for vice chair by Miss Evans, and with no further nominations the board approved Mr. Keenan as vice chair by voice vote.
The board approved a multi-item consent agenda after a motion by Mr. Keenan and a second by Miss Edwards, the chair said. The meeting then moved into an executive session under state statutes to discuss personnel matters, protection of confidential student information, attorney-client privilege and to formulate plans related to emergency response and incidents of school violence; Miss Edwards moved the executive-session motion and Mr. Morrissey seconded, and the motion carried, according to the chair.
After returning to open session, the board approved the superintendent's recommendations for personnel changes by voice vote; the chair stated there was no discussion prior to the vote.
Superintendent Dr. Bushon offered brief remarks thanking board members and staff, and reminded the board that the next regular meeting will be Jan. 14, 2025, saying, "Also a reminder that next board meeting will be 01/14/2025." Board members closed the meeting with holiday wishes to staff and families.
The meeting adjourned after a motion from Mr. King and a second by Miss Edwards; the chair thanked attendees and declared the session closed.
