Nephi City Council spent part of its Sept. 23 work session discussing a possible expansion of the municipal golf course, reviewing five years of land acquisition and preliminary financial projections.
City Administrator Seth Atkinson recounted the city's acquisition of land east of the existing course and presented revenue and expense projections for converting the site to an 18‑hole facility. Mayor Justin D. Seely and staff singled out local contributors, including Representative Burgess Owens, Senator Derrin Owens, former Mayor Glade Nielson, Golf Director Mike Booth, and Golf Superintendent Todd Clyde, for their roles in securing the property over several years.
Atkinson said management changes and rising play have boosted revenues in recent years despite higher operating costs. Staff presented potential financing tools including bond revenues, a limited number of lifetime passes to raise capital up front, and pursuit of grants. Councilors discussed pros and cons, including the significant up‑front investment required, potential increased tourism from travelers on I‑15, and options to lease or rent clubhouse space to generate revenue.
Several residents attending the meeting spoke in support of the expansion, emphasizing economic benefits and the need for a modern facility. No formal motion or vote to approve construction was recorded in the minutes; the discussion remained at the feasibility and planning stage.
