Aberdeen to hold public hearing on freestanding sign text amendment; planning board recommended change

Town planning staff summarized a proposed Unified Development Ordinance text amendment (24‑8) on Nov. 12 that would provide a more consistent sign height and area standard along major corridors and ease the relocation of freestanding signs displaced by NCDOT projects.
Staff explained that the 2020 ordinance introduced varying maximum heights by zoning district and created many nonconforming signs; the proposed text would restore a 20‑foot standard in many commercial districts (with exceptions for central business zones) and add landscape and design standards to reduce visual inconsistency. The planning board reviewed the draft and gave a unanimous recommendation to bring the amendment forward.
Commissioner (speaker 4) moved to schedule a public hearing for Nov. 25 at 6 p.m.; the motion passed by voice vote. Staff said they will bring visuals and more details to the hearing to help commissioners and the public evaluate changes and exceptions for specific parcels.
