The Duchesne County Commission on Aug. 4 approved a prorated subscription for a chatbox and search tool to be deployed across county websites and department pages.
Staff said the product is intended to reduce routine phone calls by letting users search county web content and receive answers; department heads tested the product, including foreign-language queries, and reported generally accurate results. An IT staff member described the product’s approach as "scraping" county pages to build searchable content and said the county would be able to view traffic and the questions asked to monitor accuracy and usage.
The packet listed a prorated amount of $37.50; staff said the contracted yearly cost would be about $9,000. Commissioners approved the prorated subscription, authorized a commissioner to sign and agreed to reassess value during the next budget cycle.
Questions remained in the discussion about whether the tool would aggregate content across multiple department sites and how it had engaged with statewide IT directors; staff said they would follow up on aggregation behavior and coordination with departments.
