The Siren School District’s planned playground project will not be completed this summer, the playground committee reported July 29.
Committee members said equipment layout and selections are finalized and vendors have offered discounts, but tight timelines and contractor availability mean construction would likely be delayed until spring. The committee recommended locking equipment pricing now and soliciting contractor bids in November–December so construction can begin next spring.
The board heard that the National Guard may be available to perform demolition of the existing playground surface, which could save the district an estimated $20,000 to $30,000. Committee members said they are coordinating with Rettler (the planner) and will continue to seek cost-saving options and sponsorships for elements such as benches and trees.
Members acknowledged that communication to families needs to improve: volunteers and parents had been led to expect a summer installation and the committee agreed to prepare renderings and an information letter and to share details at the district open house.
The board did not take a formal vote to change budget authorizations at the meeting but received the update and asked staff to prepare communication materials for families and the community.
