Planning staff reports no negative incidents in Downtown Social District; board hears parking study and appoints business owner to advisory board

Planner Lindy Lamielle told the Aberdeen Town Board on Oct. 13 that weekly updates over nine months show no documented negative incidents related to the Downtown Social District and that feedback has been generally favorable. The Downtown Aberdeen Advisory Board asked the town to standardize Social District hours to 11 a.m.–11 p.m., seven days a week, to avoid confusion.
Commissioner Teressa Beavers questioned whether a DUI accident in front of a local exterminating business was linked to a downtown establishment serving alcohol; Police Chief Brian Chavis told the board it was a pass-through incident and not connected to a downtown business. Lamielle said the Planning Board flagged trash receptacles for continued maintenance to prevent overflow; members agreed to revisit the item at the November work session.
Lamielle also presented an executive overview of the Downtown Parking Study. The study’s summary materials identified three completed task areas and suggested opportunities for public-private partnerships to address parking; the study estimated an additional need of about 230 spaces in downtown. Mayor Robert A. Farrell referenced reader comments on an article published in The Pilot about the study.
On board business, the Board appointed DJ Lipscomb, owner of a business at 109 W. Main Street, to fill Post #1 on the Downtown Aberdeen Advisory Board with a term expiring Jan. 2026. The appointment was made by Commissioner Teressa Beavers, seconded by Commissioner Elease Goodwin, and carried 4-0.
