Conservation commission approves Eagle Scout plan to install five benches on town trails

Varun Hariharan, a life scout, told the commission he plans to place two benches at the Van Loan Preserve, two at the Marston/Dunlap property and one on the Eagle Loop Trail. “I’m looking to get my Eagle Scout project done,” Varun said, describing fundraising by his troop, local donations and volunteer labor to cover the anticipated $500–$1,000 cost.
Commissioners asked about bench design, staining and site security; members noted past problems with moved or removed benches and suggested chaining or bolting benches and adding a small placard with the scout’s name. “We can figure that out,” conservation planner Kathleen Ports said, noting the town’s Department of Public Works would advise on permit needs and site-specific requirements.
Bill Carter moved to accept the project and the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. Chair Grant Killian confirmed the commission expects the scout and troop volunteers to coordinate with staff on final siting and logistics, and that staff will confirm any permit or DPW requirements prior to installation.
The commission did not allocate town funds for the benches; Varun said the troop will lead fundraising and donations. The commission thanked the scout for the proposal and requested a brief follow-up once locations and installation plans are finalized.
