Aberdeen’s board of commissioners approved a temporary road closure to allow a downtown HelloSpring music event on Saturday, May 16. The closure will cover setup and takedown time, with staff setting the event hours at 12 p.m.–4 p.m. and the closure running 11 a.m.–5 p.m. to allow for barricade setup and breakdown.
A downtown representative described the event as a signature music event modeled on prior third-Thursday programming with stage setup on the South Sycamore segment and participation from ABC-permitted businesses in the town’s social district. The presentation named Engine Room 87 as a projected band that had not yet been confirmed.
A board member moved to approve the temporary closing and the motion carried by voice vote. The board also appointed Mimi Scarborough to Alternate Post number 2 on the Downtown Advisory Board; Scarborough’s term was listed as expiring on Jan. 1, 2027. A downtown representative told the board Scarborough had been active in the 2024 Community Vision Forum and had provided support for downtown events, including providing overflow parking via a local church.
Board members discussed logistics such as whether the event would include vendors (the presenter said it would be a music event, not a retail/food-truck retail event) and confirmed the planned hours and street segment for the closure.
The approval allows staff and downtown partners to finalize event details and issue any necessary permits.
