Aberdeen’s board of commissioners scheduled two public hearings for 6 p.m. on March 23 to consider a package of zoning text amendments to chapters 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 that would change procedures, oath-of-office language, billing standards and standards for the industrial district and the NC5 overlay. A staff member presented the package and said the planning board gave a favorable recommendation.
The amendments include several editorial and standards changes that staff described as clarifying language so that future rezoning or conditional-zoning applications will show “what you need to see” when they come before the board, according to a planning staff member. The package was described as incorporating revisions the board has discussed over the past two to three months and as addressing conditional-zoning options and overlay standards.
A board member asked whether the proposed change to oath administration simply formalizes current practice; staff confirmed the revision would make the town clerk the official oath administrator for advisory boards to match routine practice.
The public hearings will be the formal opportunity for residents to comment before the board considers any ordinance changes. The hearings are set for March 23, 2026, at 6 p.m., according to the board schedule.
If adopted, the amendments would be incorporated into the town’s zoning and administrative code; staff said the changes were vetted by the planning board during its review process.
