Commissioner urges CRA to fund downtown maintenance and wayfinding as Circuit transit launches

At a brief May 29 meeting of the Boca Raton Community Redevelopment Agency, Commissioner Wachter urged the agency to use available tax‑increment financing to address deferred maintenance and improve downtown wayfinding as a new on‑demand transit service begins this summer.
“As we’re approaching budget season, my friends, consider including some deferred maintenance items in the amended fiscal ’24 budget and the tentative ’25 budget,” Commissioner Wachter said, calling for replacement of worn signage, continuation of a painting program at Mizner Park and additional directory and wayfinding signs. He also recommended researching digital display advertising and safety features such as emergency call stations.
The call matter-of-factly framed the choices as budget priorities: Wachter noted that some debt obligations have been retired and that there are funds in the CRA’s TIF that could be directed toward visible downtown improvements.
Chair (presiding) provided context after Wachter’s remarks, outlining a slate of upcoming downtown events and giving operational details for Circuit, an on‑demand shuttle service that the chair said will begin service June 17 to provide first‑ and last‑mile connections to the Brightline station and other downtown destinations. The chair also listed concerts, performances and museum programs scheduled for late May and June and summarized recent CRA strategic‑planning topics including Sanborn Square updates, public art, a government center master plan and parking studies.
No formal motions were introduced to reallocate TIF funds during the meeting. Earlier in the session a motion to adopt the minutes of the May 13 regular meeting was made, seconded and adopted unanimously. No public comments were received.
The agency adjourned at 1:43 p.m.
