Street abandonment SA-24-01 approved: Staff said the petition from Sandhills Law on behalf of Fat Panda LLC corrects a historic platting error for a platted but unconstructed Fairview Avenue extension at 655 West Saunders Avenue; the planning board had recommended abandonment 7–0 and the board approved the order to close the unconstructed street.
Fire tanker financing approved: The board approved a 10-year financing arrangement through Lumbee River EMC at a 3% interest rate to finance a delivered and already-paid-for fire tanker; the first payment will start in August 2025 and staff asked for attorney sign-off on closing documents.
Auditor selection: Staff solicited proposals and recommended Misty D. Watson, CPA, PA; the board approved the auditor for fiscal year 2023–24.
Resolution 24-17 (career development): The board approved changes to career development plans clarifying titles and progression paths across public works, police and fire; staff said the changes are within the adopted budget and not a request for additional funds.
Downtown community visioning forum scheduled: The board approved staff's request to schedule a downtown visioning forum with North Carolina Main Street representatives to update the town's downtown vision; staff noted limited facilitator availability and proposed a September date.
What the votes mean: Several actions aim to advance capital projects and downtown revitalization; the financing action secures favorable interest terms for a firefighting vehicle and the administrator selection meets the town's procurement timeline. The UDO text amendment on historic-review authority (TA-24-04) drew longer debate and recorded no clear majority on submission during the meeting; related guideline amendments were approved.
